Door will not open or close?
Troubleshooting

Garage door won't open? 7 things to check before you call

If the door is stuck shut, stuck open, or only lifts a few inches, use this checklist carefully. Stop if the door feels heavy, crooked, or unsafe.

This checklist is for St. George-area homeowners dealing with a door that suddenly will not open in neighborhoods like Little Valley, Bloomington, Desert Color, Washington Fields, Santa Clara, Ivins, or Hurricane. If a car is trapped, a spring snapped, or the door is crooked, skip the testing and request garage door help.

1. Look for a broken spring

If you heard a loud snap or the door only rises a few inches, the spring may be broken. Do not keep running the opener. A broken spring leaves the full weight of the door on the opener and can create more damage.

2. Check whether the door is locked

Some doors have an inside slide lock or manual lock bar. If it is engaged, the opener may strain, hum, or stop. Do not force it if the lock has already bent a bracket or rail.

3. Confirm the opener has power

Check the outlet, GFCI, breaker, and opener lights. If the wall button works but the remote does not, the problem may be remote batteries or programming instead of the door itself.

4. Watch the safety sensors

If the door starts down and reverses, look for blocked, dirty, or misaligned sensors near the floor. Strong sunlight, dust, and bumped sensor brackets can all cause trouble.

5. Look for a loose cable

A cable hanging near the track, drum, or bottom bracket is a stop sign. Avoid moving the door by hand because the door can go crooked or come off track.

6. Listen for opener strain

Grinding, humming, clicking, or a motor running without movement can point to an opener issue, stripped gear, broken trolley, or a door that is too heavy because of spring failure.

7. Do not force a crooked door

If one side rises and the other side stays down, the door may be off track or out of balance. Stop and request help before rollers, panels, or tracks bend further.

If the opener is the issue, see garage door opener repair in St. George. If the door is heavy or only lifts a few inches, start with broken spring repair.
